Marching Judges
Bill PowersBill Powers is a recently retired music educator who taught elementary, high school, and college bands throughout his career. He was the band director at West York Area Senior High School from 1974-1977, Director of Bands at Gettysburg College from 1977-1983, and band director at Hempfield High School from 1983-2009. Additionally, from 1987-2009 he served as the Hempfield School District Music Supervisor, where he led a coordinated and comprehensive K-12 Music program. He holds degrees from Gettysburg College (B.S. in Music Education), The Pennsylvania State University (M.Ed. in Music Education), and Millersville University (Supervisory Certificate). Professional affiliations to his credit include PMEA, the National Association for Music Education, the National Band Association, the American Federation of Musicians, and the Cavalcade of Bands Judges Association. He is a past president of the Lancaster-Lebanon Music Educators Association and the Cavalcade of Bands. He received the Cavalcade “Director of the Year” award for 2007-2008, and was inducted into the Cavalcade of Bands “Hall of Fame” in 2008.
Bob Murray
Bob has been involved in the marching activity since 1976. Even though he has been around the Drum & Bugle Corps activity all his life following in his father’s dads footsteps as a marching member and administrator. He has marched with the West Paterson Royal Aires, Dynamic Royal Aires and the majority of his marching career with the Hawthorne Caballeros competing corps as well as Alumni. He was also a member of the 1992 & 1994 Summer Music Game All Star Drum & Bugle Corps that perform at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. During his marching years Bob has been involved on the visual staffs the Oakland Rangers Drum & Bugle Corps, Phoenix Drum & Bugle Corps and the Bayonne Bridgemen Drum & Bugle Corps. He has also worked on the visual teams of the following High School bands Parsippany Hills, Elmwood Park and Weehawken as well as doing consulting work in the visual caption. He has also instructed and been on the administration staff of the following winter guard programs, Oakland Rangers, Parsippany Patriots, Innuendo, Parsippany Hills HS, and Elmwood Park HS. Bob is a Lead software Engineer and currently resides in Roxbury, NJ with his wife and twin girl and boy.
Bobby Molloy
Bobby Molloy graduated from Hatboro - Horsham High School in 2003 - was a member of the Hatboro - Horsham Marching Unit and the Innovaions Indoor Percussion Ensemble On the Percussion Staff at Central Bucks West High School from 2004-2005 Joined Cavalcade in 2008 as a T&P Judge and a Tabulator Currently persuing my Nursing Degree at The Pennsylvania State University Employed at Abington Memorial Hospital as an Emergency Room Technician
Dale Adair
Active since 1980 judging indoor and outdoor percussion captions for various organizations. Teaching Experience: Began teaching percussion in 1979 with various drum corps programs including the PAL Cadets, Crossmen, Madison Scouts, Archer Epler Musketeers, NY Skyliners, Reilly Raiders Alumni Corps. Have also been the percussion arranger/instructor for several high school bands including Bensalem HS, Hammonton HS, Archbishop Ryan HS, Father Judge HS, Haverford HS, Eastern HS, and Neshaminy HS. Dale has been judging at various times since 1979 as a member of Cavalcade Judging Association, judging percussion for both outdoor and indoor percussion programs.
Dennis Pringle
Dennis Pringle is a graduate of Pottstown High School and West Chester University. His marching experience includes the Pottstown and West Chester University marching bands along with the Reading Buccaneers Drum and Bugle Corps. He has over 15 years experience in drill instruction, wind arranging, show planning and drill desing/adapting. He started judging with CBA in 2007.
Dr. James Capolupo
Dr. Jim Capolupo began his career in education as an elementary music teacher. He also taught at the middle and high school levels in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Dr. Capolupo was Director of the Jazz Band at Cabrini College and Princeton University, and was the Director of the Instrumental Music Department and Assistant Professor at Lincoln University. He is one of the co-founders of the Pennsylvania All State High School Jazz Band. He has served as President of the PA National Association of Jazz Educators, and as Music Caption Chief and Judging Coordinator for the Cavalcade of Bands. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Capolupo has served as a judge to over 1000 marching, concert and jazz band festivals and parades, and was a judge for the last ten years for The Miss America Pagent Parade in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He was also inducted into Cavalcade's Hall of Fame in 2007. Dr. Capolupo is the Director of the American Music Abroad Bronze Tour and will be headed to Europe with over 200 high school musicians this summer on a concert tour of Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, and Belgium. He will be directing an all-star jazz band with some of the finest student musicians from the East Coast. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education, a Master of Arts Degree in Education, a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Human Relations and a Doctorate of Musical Arts. Dr. Jim Capolupo is presently Superintendent of Schools in Springfield, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Capolupo’s career in administration began as a coordinator of Fine Arts, then an Acting Principal, Assistant Principal, an Elementary Principal, Director of Elementary Education and an Acting Superintendent.
Dr. Mark Metz
Dr. Mark Metz, a former music educator, is a psychologist who specializes in the treatment of children and adolescents. He received a B.S. in Music Education and an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from West Chester University, a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from West Virginia University, and a Clinical Fellowship through Harvard Medical School. He has taught at all educational levels—from kindergarten through graduate school. Mark remains active in all aspects of marching music, and brings with him 35 years of experience as a performer, instructor, designer, coordinator, consultant, and adjudicator. His affiliations include a long list of notable programs, including the Cavaliers, Crossmen, and Reading Buccaneers Drum & Bugle Corps; the Cavaliers and Threshold Winter Guards; and numerous championship high school marching units. Mark is a former Judging Coordinator and Director of Education who has served as a clinician and championship-level adjudicator throughout North America. His current national affiliations include Drum Corps International, Drum Corps Associates, and Winter Guard International.
Ed Stimson
Tabulator - Ed has been developing the Cavalcade tabulators recap programs for many years since Cavalcade started using lap computers. He retired from the Colonial School District (Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) after 32 years. Currently is web master of Cavalcade of Bands.
Jeff Wise
Mr. Jeffrey Wise is a 1971 graduate of Red Lion Area Senior High School. Upon graduation, he entered the undergraduate program of Mansfield University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education in 1975. His major instrument is the trumpet. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Music Education from West Chester University as well as his Music Supervisory Degree from Millersville University. Mr. Wise began his teaching career at Friendship Central School in Friendship, New York, where he taught instrumental music in grades 4-12 for two years. In 1977, Mr. Wise moved to Concordville, Pennsylvania where he taught instrumental music in grades 7 and 8 at Garnet Valley Junior High School. In 1978, Mr. Wise relocated to Denver, Pennsylvania where he became the Cocalico High School band director for four years. And finally, in 1982, Mr. Wise came home to the Red Lion Area School District where he teaches instrumental music at the junior high school. Mr. Wise’s primary responsibilities at the junior high include instrumental music lessons, concert band, jazz band and various instrumental ensembles. Mr. Wise has also worked with the Red Lion Area Senior High School Marching Lions both as director and as an assistant. Mr. Wise is also the Music Supervisor for the Red Lion Area School District and is about to begin his 36th year of teaching instrumental music in the public schools. Mr. Wise is proud to have been a Cavalcade judge for the past 31 years and looks forward to this 32nd year of “Education Through Musical Involvement”!
Jim Cossetti
Jim Cossetti began his study of trumpet and music theory in Philadelphia with Mr. Anthony Marchione in 1959, where, during his high school years he was lead trumpet in marching band, dance band. dance band, show band and orchestra. He also was student teacher and conductor and sang with two a cappella R&R groups in Germantown (Phila.) area. After graduation he continued to perform with several R&R groups, small jazz trios and quartets in the Philadelphia and Wilmington areas, while continuing studies with Mr. Anthony Mattarese. In the mid-seventies to early 80's he continued trumpet studies and played with Mr. Richard Garrick, president and principal trumpet of the New Jersey Brass Quintet. During this time he also taught and played with several brass ensembles and drum & bugle corps, two of which earned national championships. From 1993 to 2004 he was part of the music and marching staff at Coatesville Area Senior High School, where he assisted the band directors in development of structure, show concepts, performance goals and execution of same. Jim was instrumental in increasing the level of performance for the marching band to World Class. He was also instructor, technical advisor and occasional performer with the "Coatesville Brass" ensemble. Jim is a member and Executive Secretary of the World Drum & Bugle Corps Hall of Fame, a founder and Trustee of the Pennsylvania Bugle & Drum Corps Hall of Fame and, in October 2002 assisted with formation of the international comedy singing group, "The Castaways" and became musical arranger and conductor. In 2008 he was inducted into the Bugler’s Hall of Fame along with jazz trumpeter Clark Terry among others. He was a founding member and soloist with The Music Express mixed ensemble. He was also a solo cornet with RB3 (cubed), which is the Reading Buccaneer Brass Band and is a respected music adjudicator with the Cavalcade of Bands Association for whom he judges marching bands, indoor performers and jazz bands. Most recently Jim has performed on NBC’s The 10 Show as trumpet with The Phill-E Street Band and has performed live on WXPN’s World Café. He is also the Musical Director of SoundWave, a big band jazz oriented group. He teaches all brass instruments at all levels
Jim Marando
Jim Marando has been a Cavalcade of Bands Adjudicator since 2000. Jim currently holds the position of Vice President of the New Jersey Chapter of The Percussive Arts Society and Percussion Quality Control with Cavalcade Indoor Assoc. His marching career spans over three decades, starting with the Cranford Patriots in 1975. After spending seven seasons with the Patriots, Jim continued his career in the snare line of the Hawthorne Caballeros winning the much sought after High Percussion award as well as two DCA Championships. Mr. Marando also began his teaching career while still in High School and has instructed and arranged for many percussion lines in New Jersey including three-time Champion Middletown North and two-time Champion Kearny High School. Jim continues to arrange and instruct for Northern Burlington HS as well as Freehold Township. Jim currently holds his undergraduate degree in Education and is studying percussion at Kean University under Professor James Musto.
Jim Morrison
A graduate of West Chester University (State College), Jim Morrison marched and was a soloist with with the Hanover Lancers Drum and Bugle Corps from 1972 through 1975, and the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps in 1976 and 1977. He served on the brass staff of the Bridgemen in 1987. He was the band director/music arranger at Chichester High School (1979-1985) and Henderson HS (1985-Spring 2008). During that time the Henderson band won sixteen consecutive TOB Chapter 3 Championships, four TOB Atlantic Coast championships, and the 2007 Cavalcade Independence Open Championship. He currently teaches music at Starkweather Elementary School in West Chester, PA
John Keane
John is a graduate of the former Bishop Kenrick High School where he participated as both a performer and drum major. He studied Music Education with emphasis on woodwinds and percussion at West Chester University. John has been instructing, writing, and judging shows both musically and visually for the past 25 years. His staff positions include Academy Park High School as show designer and staff coordinator. Upper Merion and Norristown Area High School as percussion caption head and arranger. John has played, conducted and arranged a number of musical shows for various organizations as well as at the high school level. He is an active member of the 17 time champion Quaker City String Band where he’s served on the show design and music staffs. He also serves as a judging representative to the city of Philadelphia for the annual Mummers Parade. John has been a part time professional musical performer and competitor for past 37 years and has performed across the United States, Canada, and Europe with various ensembles in both live performance and recording session work.
John Riley
John has been involved with competitive drum corps since 1978. He as marched in the following corps: Chinatown Drum and Bugle Corps, PAL Cadets, BlackWatch, Bayonne Bridgemen, Crossmen. John aged out of the Crossmen in 1988 under the great Mark Thurston. Having been lucky enough to be asked back to the corps to teach the drum line from 1989 - 1992. Much was learned over this period of time from some of the icons of the activity. John first started judging in Cavalcade Indoor Association percussion under Mark Thurston in 1995. He has been involved with teaching the following drum corps over the years: Crossmen, Sunrisers, Jersey Surf, East Coast Jazz, Bayonne Raiders, Westshoremen. He also taught the following band programs: Bensalem High School, Cherokee High School, Bunnell High School. John is a CBA music and percussion judge in the fall as well as an indoor percussion judge in the winter for CIA. He serves as the Director of Education for CBA. John resides in the Wissahickon Park section of Philadelphia with his wife and two children.
John Veninger
As a member of the color guard, I have marched with the Hawthorne Caballeros, Harrison Bushwackers, and New York Skyliners. I retired from marching in 2002. I served as the color guard caption head for the New York Skyliners for three seasons. In addition, I taught the marching band color guards of North Bergen HS, North Plainfield HS, Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS, and Matawan HS. I have also been involved in the winter guard activity. I was a member of Winter Sky. I designed for Matawan HS, North Bergen HS, Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS, and the Fusion Winterguard
Josh Decker
Mr. Josh Decker is currently in his eighth year of service as a music teacher for the Conestoga Valley School District. Josh has taught in many roles at CV, including serving as high school band director, teaching electronic music, music theory, AP music, introduction to fine arts and service as the band director at Fritz Elementary School. His current primary duties are to direct the high school women’s chorus and middle school orchestra as well as to teach some middle school general music classes. He came to CV after first teaching for a year and a half as an elementary band director in the Pennsauken Township School District in Pennsauken, NJ. While there he also served as the assistant director to the high school marching band. Mr. Decker received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from West Chester University. While at West Chester as an alto saxophone major, he participated in various musical ensembles including marching band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, men’s chorus, and concert choir. . Outside of CV Josh served for eight years (from 2001-2008) as the drum major for the current defending champion Reading Buccaneers Sr. Drum and Bugle Corps. This includes their 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 Undefeated D.C.A. World Championship seasons. Most recently, Mr. Decker just assumed the position of Marching Band Director for the Millersville University Marching Marauders.
Keith Griffin
Mr. Keith D. Griffin began his marching career in 1964 with the New York Braves Drum and Bugle Corps (a diaper corps). He marched his next ten years with the CMCC Warriors. In 1976 he aged out of junior corps as the soloist of the Bayonne Bridgemen and he continued as a featured soprano soloist with the world famous Hawthorne Caballeros Sr. Drum and Bugle Corps. Mr. Griffin is currently an administrator/teacher for the Department of Education in New York City. He has a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Long Island University as well as a Master of Arts from Jersey City State College. He is presently working on his Post Graduate Degree with the Department of Education, NYC. Keith has a great deal of instructional experience with many marching bands and corps including the Warriors, Bridgemen, Caballeros and the Reading Buccaneers. This is Keith's fifth season as a judge for Cavalcade.
Kimberly Jones
Kimberly Jones started her performing career as an Advanced Soloist Baton Twirler in USBTA. Once her interest in the color guard world was "born". Kim spent Five years marching with the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps holding the title of Guard Capt for 2 of those years. Followed by marching two years with the award winning Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps from Concord, CA. This opened up numerous opportunities to evolve and grow within the activity. Leading to over 30 years of dance and color guard experience thru both formal classes and hands on teaching experiences. Kimberly's indoor experience includes marching with the Black Watch color guard from New Jersey, The Blue Devils indoor program and "The Guard" Senior Guard from Allentown, PA. She is currently instructing the movement program with the World Class WGI Light Brigade Color Guard from Philadelphia, PA Kim has taught at numerous High School programs across the tri-state region and is currently assisting with the design and movement program at Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster, PA. Her everyday activities include working in "Corporate America" as a Human Resource Benefits Coordinator. She currently resides in PA with her husband and 4 children.
Matt Wolfe
Matthew is a music education major at Messiah College with a concentration in percussion. He has experience performing in marching ensembles in DCA, DCI open class, and DCI world class. He has performed with the Reading buccaneers, the Jersey Surf, and most recently the Glassmen in 2009. Matthew has been involved with teaching schools such as Boonsboro, Greencastle-Antrim, and Cedar Crest in both outdoor and indoor percussion ensembles. Matthew also participates in various ensembles such as winds ensemble, orchestra, various percussion ensembles, and various community ensembles throughout the area as a percussionist.
Monica Morrison
After attending and marching with West Chester University, Monica Morrison has been instructing and writing for twenty years. She is a drill designer, color guard designer, choreographer, and technician. She has designed drill for Egg Harbor Township and Brandywine High School. As drill designer with Henderson High School in West Chester, PA, she designed, taught, and cleaned the entire visual package in their sixteen consecutive years as TOB Chapter 3 Champions, four TOB Atlantic Coast championships, and the 2007 Cavalcade Independence Open Championship (winning high visual and color guard). In addition, she directed their indoor color guard programs with 3 chapter championships and two TIA All Chapter bronze medals. She is currently the color guard director at Spring Ford HS, three time Atlantic Coast Champion and 2008 Yankee Open Champion.
Pat O'Shea
Pat O'Shea is a teacher, musician and writer in the Philadelphia area. He teaches percussion at Kennedy Kenrick HS, St. Aloysius, Saint Helena's, and Cardinal O’Hara HS. He has been working with high school drumlines since 1989 and has been judging for Cavalcade since 2006. He received his B.A. Degree in Music from Slippery Rock University in 1994. Pat marched snare drum in a competitive high school and in a corps style college drumline. He currently performs with Philadelphia Fife and Drum in the Independence Hall area. Pat is a freelance drumset performer and has played for many jazz bands, rock bands and musicals in Philly and Atlantic City. He has also written articles for Modern Drummer Magazine and the Percussive Arts Society.
Paul Smith
Paul Smith is a graduate of North Penn High School and Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he holds BFA degree in percussion. His marching experience includes the North Penn and IUP marching bands along with the Bux-Mont Raiders and Crossmen junior drum and bugle corps. He began teaching marching percussion in 1977 and has over 24 years of arranging and teaching a variety of marching and concert percussion ensembles along with several drum and bugle corps. He is a member of the Montgomery County Concert Band, Pottstown Symphony Orchestra and also performs regularly at The First Presbyterian Church in Pottstown, as well with other ensembles in the area. Judging pageantry arts began in 1983 and continues through today. His judging affiliations include the Cavalcade of Bands, Cavalcade Indoor Drill Association, Mid Atlantic Percussion Society, Indiana Percussion Association, Atlantic Indoor Association, Southern California Percussion Alliance and Drum Corps Associates. Paul works for the JW Pepper Sheet Music Company in Paoli, PA as their Vice President of Communications, Percussion Editor and National Conventions Coordinator. He is published through both Alfred Publishing and Honeyrock Publishing. He currently resides in Pottstown, Pa with his wife and two college age children. Paul is currently the 2010/2011 Judging Coordinator for the Cavalcade of Bands.
Rodney Altemose
Rodney Altemose joined the Cavalcade of Bands as a marching band judge in the fall of 2002. During his time with CBA, he has judged all our visual captions. He has also judged indoor color guards as well through the years. Though last year he assisted the CBA judging coordinator in quality control of the visual judges. Prior to joining Cavalcade, he instructed the University of Tennessee "Pride of the Southland Band" and the Shippensburg University Red Raider Marching band. With both bands he assisted in writing, designing and teaching the overall show concept. Currently Mr. Altemose is the Executive Director of the Upper Bucks Campus of Bucks County Community College. He resides in Chalfont,PA.
Ron Cowart
Ron Cowart graduated from Upper Moreland HS and Bucks County Community College in Newtown, PA. As a Music Major focusing on Vocal and Choral Music he has worked with many high school marching band and winter guard programs for over 33 years. As a percussion, color guard and marching instructor he has taught in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Tennessee teaching over 30 groups in 34 years in the activity Performing groups have included the Bux-Mont Raiders Jr. Drum & Bugle Corps, Archer-Epler Musketeers Sr. Drum & Bugle Corps, the Wind Gap Blue Eagles Sr. Drum & Bugle Corps and the Lehigh Valley Chieftains Sr. Drum & Bugle Corps. He also performed in the Phoenix and Phoenix Stars Color Guard from Norristown, PA. He assisted in the founding of the Northwind Indoor Color Guard from Lansdale PA and has been the Executive Director and designer for Northwind since. Currently he is on the Board of Directors of the StarCross Youth Performing Arts, Inc. and Program Director of the StarCross Indoor Color Guard. Ron began his judging experience in 1980 judging independently at various PMEA Marching Band Festivals and parades. In 2005 he began his association with the Cavalcade of Bands as both an auxiliary and field visual judge. He will be celebrating his 36th year in the Pageantry Arts in 2011!
Tom West
Thomas J. West is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over ten years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, orchestra director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. He is currently a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts, a unique school which is part of the innovative Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School. Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University with Master's equivalency. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who’s Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.
